Roof pitch is the ratio of a roof's vertical rise in inches to each foot of horizontal distance [called the run]. A 4-in-12 pitch describes a roof that rises 4 inches vertically for every 12 inches of horizontal distance. Contractors often talk about "rise-to-run" or pitch.
