Photobooth History
According to Tom Lehrer's tongue-in-cheek song, "Lobachevsky",
scholarship is really a matter of stealing from more than one source
"only be sure always to call it please, research"
Wade Tinney has a wonderful Photobooth history at:
http://www.photobooth.org/history/index.html
He, in turn, cites an essay written by Bern Boyle for the
catalogue of a photobooth exhibit that took place in the
East Village (NYC) in 1987
I appreciate their contributions to my "research"
- 1872 "Photography takes the human form" Edward Estabrooke wrote in
'The Ferrotype and How to Make It'
- 1883 Percival Everett invented the first commercially viable
coin-operated vending machine
- 1887 the Adam Gum Company installed machines that sold Tutti-Frutti on
the El platforms [stations of the elevated subway lines] in New York City
- 1889 Mathew Stiffens patented an automatic photography machine
- 1889 Monsieur Enjalbert demonstrated a tintype machine at the
Exposition Universelle in Paris
- 1925 Anatol Josepho, patented his "Photomaton"
It Produced a strip of 8 photographs of good quality in 8 minutes.
His prototype was built in a Harlem loft.
The first photobooth studio was at Broadway and 51st Street in New York City.
- 1927 Josepho sold the rights to his invention for the considerable sum of $1,000,000
to a group of businessmen planning to establish 70 of these mechanical studios at Coney
Island, Atlantic City and strategic points throughout the United States by the end of the
first year, hoping to "do in the photographic field what Woolworth has accomplished
in novelties"
- 1934 A photobooth photo was taken of Anne Frank. Later, this is used as the cover of a book about her.
- 1946 Gupp Allen and ID Baker develop THEIR booth
- 1958 Photo-Me Studios Ltd is formed in the UK
- 1960s Andy Warhol began using photobooth portraits in artwork
- 1976 Colour photos are now approved for UK passports
- 1997 Isis developed a sticker photo booth
- 1993 Photo-Me and Kis (a French Company) PhotoVision booth
- 1998 Photo-Me acquires ProntoPhoto making it the biggest manufacturer in the industry
- 2006 Pergola brings modern, solid engineering and software craftsmanship
to the UK and offers a new, insightful standard of service to the bespoke
Event industry.

at the Square Meals Venue & Events show in September.

After the party, here is another Pergola Exclusive that is truly unusual and totally charming :
Mosaic Tapestries.
Pergola creates a modern interpretation of
two ancient arts by offering "Mosaic Tapestries".
It is a Mosaic because we treat each image from the Photobooth as if it
is a tile in a mosaic. It is a tapestry because we can print the result on
three foot long rolls of Canvas!
